The Importance of Garlic in Your Pet's Diet

Garlic is a member of the Allium genus, a branch of the lily family that also includes hundreds of varieties of onions, leeks, chives, and shallots. Garlic’s use as a medicine dates back thousands of years and is known for its antibacterial, anticancer, antioxidant, antitumor, antiviral, and antifungal qualities. Garlic also stimulates the immune system and lowers blood pressure. Its strongest affinities are to the liver, blood, cardiovascular system and the immune system. Garlic contains considerable amounts of protein, fibre, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sodium, vitamin A, thiamine, niacin, taurine, zinc, riboflavin, and dozens of other nutritive compounds. Unlike conventional antibiotics, garlic works against many forms of virus but won’t compromise the populations of beneficial flora in the digestive tract.

Organic, fresh, raw garlic is the purest and most effective form. If used properly, garlic is valuable for the treatment of any form of internal or external bacterial, viral, or fungal infection. This can include parasites, such as tapeworms and protozoan organisms such as Giardia. Fresh garlic can be fed as a part of your pets diet to fight infections in the mouth, throat, respiratory tract, stomach or intestines. Garlic helps the liver function and cleanse the body to prevent toxic accumulations that may lead to more serious diseases such as cancer. Garlic also helps lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels making it useful for miniature schnauzers, beagles, and other breeds that are predisposed to hyperlipidemia – a condition that may lead to chronic seizures. Many researches even believe that garlic may be as useful as aspirin in its capacity to prevent blood clots. This is very promising when it comes to felines since they cannot tolerate the salicylate constituents of aspirin.

My favourite and most effective use for garlic has been for fleas. I have never seen a single one on any of my pets or in my home. I have never had to use flea collars, sprays or chemical treatments on my pets – EVER. How is this possible when my dog comes in contact with hundreds of other pets each year, rolls in the sand each day and god only knows what else! I believe we have a flea free home because of the raw fresh garlic in our pet’s diets. Fleas on pets can number in the hundreds and cause serious health consequences. It can reduce a pet’s appetite and interfere with their immune system. The bites from fleas cause serious allergies, itching, hair loss and raw sores. Fleas, like most parasites are attracted to weak hosts, those whose immune systems won’t repel them. When we douse our pets with chemicals to repel fleas we weaken their immune systems, making them even more vulnerable. The good news – fleas are not attracted to healthy, well-nourished pets and fleas are easier to prevent than cure. So a premium raw diet filled with raw meat, organs, bones, vegetables, fruits, and garlic is your best defence against fleas. Fleas hate the smell and taste of garlic and tend to stay away from a pet that has been eating garlic on a daily basis. Just as we exude garlic through our skin, so do our pets.

So please STOP using commercial and chemical flea preventatives. Most commercial flea products contain insecticides that act like nerve gas to paralyse the nervous systems of fleas. Members of the insecticide family like fenthion and vapona can cause tremors and heart and respiratory complications in pets, even leukemia and death. Even worse, flea treatments that are taken orally by pets are meant to exude through their skin. This means that the chemicals are being absorbed inside the pet polluting their digestive system and then oozing out of their skin. Doesn’t sound right to me. Then there are the “drops” that are to be put onto our pets between their shoulder blades. Overuse of these drops can lead to vomiting, headaches, and neurological dysfunctions. I think I will stick to garlic…

There are warnings about the danger of garlic or that it is harmful to pets. This comes from the two chemical compounds s-methyl cysteine sulfoxide and N-propyldisuldhide contained in garlic that have been shown to produce Heinz-body anemia, a serious blood disorder. These compounds are believed to diminish a naturally occurring glucose enzyme called Glucose-6-phospate dehydrogenase (G6PD). This enzyme protects the walls of red blood cells and depletion causes damage to these cells. This happens if the cloves are consumed in an excess of 0.5 percent of the animal’s body weight. This means that a healthy 60 lb dog would have to eat several cloves of garlic just to start the process. The problem is dose dependent meaning that the blood structure quickly normalizes when garlic consumption is reduced or discontinued.

Symptoms to watch for include:
-weakness, lethargy
-discoloured urine
-pale or white gums
-rapid breathing
-vomiting
-diarrhea

In the wild animals graze on wild garlic and onions to fill some instinctive need other than hunger. They pick and choose only a few select plants and then move on. Our pets do not have the same luxury so we must provide the proper and safe amounts to them ourselves. A proper once a day dosage is generally 1/8 to 1/4 of a teaspoon of fresh garlic to one pound of food fed. We take these numbers into consideration when making The Lucky Spot Premium Pet Food. Our food contains safe doses of organic, raw, fresh garlic so you don’t have to worry. Just feed your pets and enjoy the wonderful benefits!

Why are we blogging?

We come across some great topics of discussion with our customers on how to feed a raw diet or "B.A.R.F" diet, why is a fresh/frozen diet better than commercial kibble, how to manage different pet illnesses and disease through diet, and much more. We figured this would be a great forum to share our opinion on these topics. So stay tuned for our future blogs...
